Pottery has been a long, but rewarding journey for me over the last 6 years. Going into high school, I felt compelled to take ceramics as my free elective. Under the supervision of one of the most inspiring ceramics teachers I have ever encountered, I became obsessed with everything clay. I loved handbuilding, but once I was exposed to throwing on the wheel, I never wanted to do anything else. I am pretty sure that I was the only student in high school carrying around a bucket of tools and a work in progress to all of my classes: German, History, Literature, you name it...I almost always had my clay in tow. The gratification that comes along with being able to make a functional vessel from a ball of clay in just a few minutes is unsurmountable.
As I continued to work and grow in the 50 minutes I was alloted in the ceramics studio each day, I realized that pottery was a passion that would never go away. So of course, I wanted more access to the world of clay. After much persuasion and years of begging, my parents helped fund my clay addiction. I was allowed to purchase my first wheel --- which since the day it was bought has never remained clean --- and eventally my own kiln.
In the fall of 2013, I began my college journey at Berry College and was forced to step away from my wheel. The separation from this ceramic world that I had fully immersed myself in for all of high school only served to further ignite my passion. Following the completion of my first year of college, I decided that I wanted to combine my two worlds of academics and clay. Today, that is my pursuit. I am using clay not only as a way to remain sane in the chaos that surrounds college life, but also as a way to fund the road to be paved for my future.
